Sensor Level Technology

The cornerstone of any tank monitoring solution starts with selecting the best technology to monitor the level of the liquid or solid in the tank.

The most common method for monitoring tanks is hydrostatic pressure. This method looks at the pressure at the bottom of the tank and calculates the height based on the liquids specific gravity commonly referred to as static head pressure. This can be accomplished using a submersible pressure transducers that lowers to the bottom of your tank using an open port on the top of the tank or an exterior outlet near the bottom of the tank. This technology is most commonly used for water but can also be used for oil and chemicals. This is an economical method but does present challenges in liquids like oil where the exact specific gravity is not known or periodically changes, which results in readings that can be off. Application that require a high level of accuracy guided wave radar is a great method but has a much higher cost than a submersible pressure transducer.

Ultrasonic is the other common technology used for measuring liquid level by using a sound wave and bouncing it off the top of the liquid. The benefits of ultrasonic sensors are no contact with the liquid, less maintenance and easy installation. The disadvantages of this technology can be bad readings due to heavy vapors, surface turmoil, foam, ambient noise and temperature so the tank location medium and conditions need to be considered before choosing this technology.

Radar is another great technology used to determine tank level. Radar has advantages in conditions such as high temperatures. High pressures, fine powders, or sticky fluids but like guided wave radar technology it is more expensive.

Hydrostatic Pressure Example

Hydrostatic pressure - This is the process of measuring the pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium at a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity of the liquid being measured also referred to as hydrostatic head pressure. This technology is commonly used in water tanks or any liquid which specific gravity does not change.

Guided Wave Example

Guided-Wave Radar (GWR) - A contacting level measurement method that uses a probe to guide high-frequency electromagnetic waves from a transmitter to the media being measured. GWR offers accuracy down to +/- 2MM and works in environments with dust, foam and heavy vapors. Guided Wave Radar can also be used to determine the interface between two media.

Ultrasonic Example

Ultrasonic Level Sensors - Ultrasonic works by the “Time of flight” principle using the speed of sound. This process of measuring the distance between the transducer and the surface using the time required for an ultrasound pulse to travel from a transducer to the fluid surface and back.

RADAR - Operating on the time-of-flight method, Radar measures the distance from the reference point (process connection) to the product surface. Radar impulses (FMCW principle) are emitted by an antenna, reflected off the product surface and received again by the radar system. The distance to the product surface is proportional to the travel time of the impulse.

Additionally, we can use Capacitance Level Transmitters, Magnetostrictive Level Transmitters & Laser Level Transmitters.
