Sensor Level Technology

Accuracy and precision are the two cornerstones of any tank monitoring solution: Measurements that are close to the known value are said to be accurate, whereas measurements that are close to each other are said to be precise for a remote system to be effective, the sensors that are used must score well on both of these. This is more difficult to achieve than one might assume, which is why we support a wide - range of sensor types to achieve accurate and precise measurements for a wide range of chemicals and liquids that can operate in virtually any location. Some examples of the sensors that we use are:

Hydrostatic Pressure Example

Hydrostatic pressure - The most common method for monitoring tanks, hydrostatic pressure sensors take a pressure reading at the bottom of the tank and calculate the height of the liquid, known as the static head pressure, based on that liquid’s specific gravity. This can be accomplished using a submersible pressure transducers that lowers to the bottom of your tank using an open port on the top of the tank or an exterior outlet near the bottom of the tank. This technology is most commonly used for water but can also be used for oil and chemicals.

Guided Wave Example

Guided-Wave Radar (GWR) - For applications that require a high level of accuracy, guided wave radar is the preferred method, but these sensors tend to have a higher cost than their Hydrostatic counterparts. GWR offers accuracy down to +/- 2MM and works in environments with dust, foam and heavy vapors. Guided Wave Radar can also be used to determine the interface between two media.

Ultrasonic Example

Ultrasonic Level Sensors - Ultrasonic is another common sensor technology used for measuring liquid level. It works by bouncing sound waves off of the top of the liquid and works by the “Time of flight” principle using the speed of sound. This process of measuring the distance between the transducer and the surface using the time required for an ultrasound pulse to travel from a transducer to the fluid surface and back.

The benefits of ultrasonic sensors include no contact with the liquid, less maintenance and easy installation. The disadvantages are that they are subject to interference from heavy vapors, surface turmoil, foam, ambient noise and temperature. For some mediums this is not an issue. Rugged Telemetry can help make that decision based on what is being measured and where the tank is located.

Ultrasonic Example

RADAR - Radar is another sensor type. Radar is a well know and reliable technology used to determine tank level. Operating on the time-of-flight method, Radar measures the distance from the reference point (process connection) to the product surface. Radar impulses (FMCW principle) are emitted by an antenna, reflected off the product surface and received again by the radar system. The distance to the product surface is proportional to the travel time of the impulse. Radar has advantages in conditions such as high temperatures. High pressures, fine powders, or sticky fluids. However, as with guided wave sensors, radar technology is generally more expensive.
