IoT Academic Partnerships

Many industry experts and excited consumers have pegged the Internet of Things (IoT) as the next biggest advancement in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) field. IoT represents a new future for the ways in which businesses, governments, and consumers interact with the physical world.

Rugged Telemetry is proud to have created the first STEM IoT program enabling college and high school students to get meaningful, hands-on experience with advanced hardware and software systems that will inspire and teach them about the evolving ecosystem of IoT technology.

IoT for Stem

IoT refers to systems of interrelated software and hardware devices that exchange data with each other over a connective communication network. Examples of IoT in business include such things as remote tank monitoring and fleet management systems, while consumer-grade examples include smart home technologies and cloud-based security systems.

From utilities and agriculture to education and healthcare, IoT is revolutionizing every aspect of society and business, making it easier than ever for individuals and organizations to monitor up-to-the-minute, real-time data and developments, as well as responding to changing situations in an instant.

According to Statista, by 2030 the global IoT market is expected to generate revenues in excess of one trillion dollars. That makes it one of the most lucrative and fastest growing industries within STEM. At Rugged Telemetry, we believe that a practical IoT education will only become increasingly important for STEM students in the coming years.

STEM Program

Rugged Telemetry’s STEM program is based on real-world applications of IoT technology. Our approach to education follows the same steps as the design process we use to create IoT solutions for all of our customers.

This process starts with data collection, as well as understanding the kind of data that needs to be collected. For example, monitoring rural water and wastewater utilities may require using a different set of sensors than a lake with algae issues or a river with possible sewage contamination.

Once the sensors needed have been identified, students will turn to the technological side of STEM in order to correctly install and configure those sensors for data collection.  After they have completed the installation of the equipment, the students will then be able to look at that data in our STEM platform, analyze and share the data, and make decisions based on that data.

Rugged Telemetry’s IoT partnerships focus on helping students develop a comprehensive knowledge of the different kinds of sensors, their functionality, and their uses. The program also includes information on remote communications over cellular and satellite networks, as well as cloud-based systems for retrieving and analyzing data.
